As a child growing up in the 80’s, we had some of the BEST music. Of course, everyone says that about their generation’s music. I still listen to those old hits of the 70’s/80’s and recently came across a favorite from the band Depeche Mode. Their only song to hit the US top 10, “Enjoy the Silence”. This song inspires two (2) important concepts I want to touch on 1.) Contentment and 2.) Silence. Now, when you listen to the lyrics of this song the underlying theme is one of contentment. What does it mean to be content? Think about that for a moment. For me it’s about being at peace with what is. Some might say, the present moment and the infinite possibility that exists in that instance. The song reminds us to enjoy that which is where words are unnecessary, as they can only do harm. Meaning, that when we are content nothing else is needed in that moment. It’s about resting in the knowing that we are already complete as we are. There is nothing more we have to do, say or prove to anyone but to simply know that we are enough. To be content. That thought by itself can bring about a wave of peace and relief within us, just sitting with ourselves and feeling content, even if just for a moment, that everything is OK just as it is and we are right where we are meant to be. Enjoying the Silence . . .
and speaking of silence, how does one enjoy silence? Better yet, how does one actually achieve silence? Our world is so busy, chaotic, buzzing with activity and even if you find some quiet time you may discover your own mind is swirling with thoughts and things to do? I know, I do. Sitting in mindful meditation, it can be challenging to turn off or quiet the mind – in fact, I would submit that it’s nearly impossible to shut out all thoughts. But isn’t that the point of the song? ENJOY the silence – in other words, we may not be able to stop our minds and thoughts from flowing but we can absolutely change the thoughts we have during those mindful moments. Moving away from the busyness, anxiety, worry, to those of enjoyment. It’s nothing you probably haven’t heard before, but in practice our minds have a tendency to wander. Take a moment and ask yourself, what do I enjoy? What do I truly enjoy? What experiences, what places, people, activities, and moments bring me peace and joy? Really think about that, and if you’re a list person like me – you might also create a list of those experiences, those moments for yourself so that when you’re in silence (meditation, driving in your car, walking to school/work) you can focus your attention on that which you ENJOY, that which brings you peace. Maybe it’s a sunset on the beach, time spent with family/friends, a special hobby/activity that you like to do. Whatever it is for you, make note of those moments so that you can call them up in the silence and generate a feeling of enjoyment. You know, countless spiritual teachers well before my time have cited not only the power of where we place our focus, but the feeling that we emit to the universe. Neville Goddard being one of those who talks about “The Feeling is the Secret”. You can use these moments of silence as a powerful way to emit feelings of peace/joy with positive impacts on your spiritual being and aura Whatever fills you with peace, contentment – please allow yourself to Enjoy the Silence.
I hope these words have brought newfound inspiration on your spiritual journey. Until next time, much love and light to you all.
